Monetise mobile games in the desktop arena with Marmalade

Rating: Port mobile apps to PC and Mac in days

How things have changed. With thousands of downloads under your belt, how do you make even more money out of your existing mobile app/game? Simples. You produce a Windows and Mac OS X version of it. Hence Marmalade – which provides a cross-platform tool that enables app developers to produce software which runs on multiple mobile OS has introduced a beta release of its latest package (6.1) which enables developers to further monetise their content across. This will work over popular desktop channels such as Steam, Gamersgate and the Mac Store. As part of the 6.1 Beta program, Marmalade is now working closely with leading game studios – HotGen and Nomad Games to showcase the new support.“Building apps with Marmalade is simply a question of using the best tool for the job.”

“The ability to seamlessly port our content to the widest possible range of platforms is vital, as is having access to open platform support and a flexible toolset, ” claimed Terry Haynes, md with HotGen.

He continued, “The iOS and Android games we built with Marmalade have seen great success, and we’re thrilled now to be able to bring these to Windows and Mac.”

The first titles to be ported to Windows and Mac successfully as part of the beta program are To-Fu, To-Fu 2 and Spacelings (HotGen/Devolver) and a PC game approaching completion by Nomad Games.

“Marmalade lets us leverage our resources really efficiently in a small team. As seasoned C++ programmers we could start coding immediately and make the most of our experience,” explained Mat Draper, programming director with Nomad Games.

He added, “The biggest win with Marmalade is the platform support – having never previously targeted mobile platforms, we had demos up and running within days.”

It seems just yesterday that games developed for a mobile format were viewed as the poor cousins to desktop and console created games. Now everyone aims to be the next Angry Birds.
