Billions wiped off Samsung’s cap in wake of US court ruling

Investors desert South Korean maker for fear things can only get worse

More than $12 billion was wiped off the value of Samsung in early trading in Asia today [27th August 2012] as the ramifications of Apple’s Californian court victory sank in.
On Friday US jurors delivered a sweeping victory to Apple in its battle with the South Korean giant, ordering it to pay US$1.05 billion dollars in damages for violating its patents on smartphone technology. More critically, Samsung could now be forced to stop selling handsets in the US that are deemed to violate those patents.
At 2am GMT Samsung’s shares were down more than 7.6 per cent, wiping 12.7 trillion won (US$11.2 billion) off the company’s cap.
It’s meteoric plunge in value could ultimately have an impact on South Korea itself, given that it produces around a fifth of the nation’s total exports and that its revenues, until now, have been larger than many countries’ GDP.

On Asian trading early today much of the selling of Samsung shares was from local brokers, soon followed by foreign brokers. Foreign investors hold about half of Samsung shares.
One analyst, Song Myung-sup of Hi Investment & Securities said: “The context of the loss in this case is a lot worse than had been expected.”
Although a US sales ban on Samsung smartphones is still subject to appeal, he added that if that failed then the Korean manufacturer’s revenues could really start to feel the pinch from the fourth trading quarter on – coinciding, as it does, with the vital Christmas selling season.
Another concern is whether the patent battle will spread to Samsung’s flagship Galaxy S III phone. Friday’s court verdict alluded only to patent infringements on older Samsung’s handsets.
Share prices of HTC and other Asian makers of smartphones running Google’s Android op, which was another part of Apple’s lawsuit, were also badly hit Monday morning.
A key beneficiary of the US court decision could be struggling Finnish maker Nokia and others using the non-disputed Microsoft Windows OS. Ironically, Nokia used to be the world’s largest phone maker by unit sales – before it was overtaken by Samsung.

UK’s Monitise revs up for fast lane

£24m cash injection to help mobile payments firm accelerate growth

AIM-listed Monitise, which provides mobile payments technology for Visa and most of the UK high street banks, will pass another milestone this Wednesday [29th August 2012] when it raises around £24 million through the placing of up to 81 million new shares. With the pace of mobile payment innovation hotting up and Apple tipped to introduce its own scheme with its new iPhone next month, rival contenders need to secure turf now before users of the new technologies get too settled. Google Wallet is nearly a year old while PayPal is already enabling mobile payments via the cloud for 50 million mobile users without the need for a physical phone at the point of purchase. Its US customers buying goods at designated stores merely enter their mobile number and PIN at a checkout keypad to transfer cash from a bank account or credit card, via the PayPal system.

Retailers, phone ops and card issuers are also rushing to get in on the act with, in the UK, Monitise already boasting £110 million of committed orders plus a further £160 million of additional revenue promised.
Its technology is backed by Visa Inc, the world’s largest credit and debit-card network which currently owns about 9 per cent of the firm, while on Wednesday Visa Europe will increase its holding to about 10 per cent through taking on 45.2 million new shares, making it Monitise’s largest shareholder.
Around 28.1 million shares are also being set aside for other “strategic investors,” possibly Norway’s Norges Bank and private equity firm 3i Group who already have substantial shareholdings.
Meanwhile Monitise, whose full-year 2012 revenues are expected to come in around £34m – more than double of that last year – claims some 16 million people are now using its services, their ranks swollen by a further one million customers every month.
Though the 700-employee company is still losing money due to heavy investment in the new technology along with acquisitions such as Clairmail in the US last month, CEO Alastair Lukies maintains the company is on track to break even this time next year.
The company is also rumoured to be considering a listing on Nasdaq where investors are deemed to be more attracted to newer technologies, their appetites whetted by the estimated $240 billion’s worth of transactions conducted via mobile payments last year [2011] – mainly in the US – and with the market expected to triple by 2016.

How to identify which Apple iPhone you have

Rating: bargains to be had after iPhone 5 comes out

A whole bunch of Apple fanboys will be upgrading to the latest iPhone model in the near future. That’s if the rumours that the Cupertino based maker actually introduces an iPhone 5 next month [September 2012], are true. Which means there will be a healthy number of older iPhones kicking around for very little dosh [money]. For the newbie, however, how to you identify which model you’re being offered? And more to the point, how do you find out how much storage it boasts? The first step is to turn the handset over and printed on the back is Model A****. For example, an iPhone 3GS is A1303 and an iPhone 4 is A1332.

GoMobile News found the number displayed in a chart on the Apple support site here. We’ve reprinted the information below to help you out.

Next you need to know if the handset has 8, 16, 32, or 64 GB of storage. The only effective way to check we’ve found is to power the handset on.

Next find the ‘Settings icon and select that. If you can’t see the ‘General’ option immediately, scroll down and select it.

Now check ‘About’ and there will be a figure next to the word ‘Capacity’.

Just to confuse you, that figure won’t bear any resemblance to the five possibilities named above. That’s because it’s a reference to spare capacity.

So on a very basic 8 GB model, it will probably say something like 6.2 GB. Similarly on a 32 GB model it will probably say 28.5 GB.

Now here’s the catch. Under ‘About’ the handset will tell you which network it is connected to. But what if there’s no SIM card in the phone? You’d better check with the owner because although it is possible, it isn’t advisable to unlock an iPhone for any network.

Now the later iPhone models have the micro SIM card. Now you can contact a network operator like 02 over the Net and the company will send you a microSIM along with instructions on how to migrate from the traditional SIM card.

A lot faster method is to go into a High Street phone repair shop and get them to cut the SIM done to size. They should charge no more than £2 for this.

Now, how do you calculate how much to pay for the second hand iPhone. We’d recommend going onto a mobile phone recycling price comparison chart such as Sellmymobile.

At this point in time our iPhone 3GS with 8 GB capacity is worth just £67.

Look through the list of purchasers because you might find you’d prefer to go with Boots the Chemist which would offer you 6,400 points instead of the folding stuff.

Happy shopping.

Resumed Best Buy takeover talks could prove windfall for Carphone Warehouse

Clause tucked into partnership deal could let Carphone get back other half of its biz at bargain price

Carphone Warehouse could be in for a handsome profit and undergo a major reshuffle if resumed takeover talks for its partner Best Buy are successful. The two share ownership of retailer CPW Europe, which in the UK operates under the Carphone Warehouse brand, as well as the emerging markets-focused business Global Connect. In the USA, Best Buy’s founder Richard Schulze has made an offer worth up to $8.84 billion to buy the company back and, though talks initially stalled, they’re now said to be back on track. Schulze resigned as chairman of Best Buy in May after it was found he “acted inappropriately” in a scandal surrounding its CEO Brian Dunn and his relationship with a female staffer.

Dunn also resigned. Since then Best Buy’s share price has dropped dramatically, plunging 11 per cent this week alone.

But Schulze still owns a fifth of the company and is now fighting to buy it back with the help of private equity.

According to reports out of the US yesterday [23rd August 2012], the only hurdle is the terms surrounding due diligence allowing Schulze and his equity partners to examine the books before committing.

Best Buy have offered a 60 day time limit for Schulze to show his hand, with a separate clause preventing him from mounting a hostile takeover within a year if the bid is unsuccessful.

Schulze has demanded more leeway though the fact the two sides are talking again is said to be significant.

For Carphone Warehouse, any takeover of Best Buy could prove a windfall – on the one hand allowing it to take hold of the European business at the same time selling its stake in Global Connect.

Charles Dunstone sold half of Carphone Warehouse Europe, which owns his stores in the UK and on the continent, to Best Buy for £1.1 billion in 2008.

The pair also have a profit-sharing agreement to create a chain of mobile phone stores in China and Mexico.

But if Schulze succeeds in his bid to buy out the company he founded, a clause in its deal with Carphone Warehouse would allow Dunstone to buy back his half of his business for just £440 million which, at current exchange rates, is around £660m less than Best Buy originally paid.

In short, a nice little earner…

Guest Post: The reality of mobile phone tracking for businesses

What you can do with mobile spy software if it is legal

by Ricky Martin who works with Cellphone Tracking

The harsh reality is that the days of the ‘Ethical Work Culture’ have gone. This leads some employees to resort to unprofessional conduct like passing the secrets of the companies they work for to the rival companies. This led some companies to resort to advanced technologies to combat such problems timely. One such tool is mobile phone tracking software – often referred to as cellphone spyware. The use of such software may run counter to certain legalities but in many cases it may be possible to overcome them.

The rules for the usage of certain technologies varies from county to country, of course.

It is, naturally, possible to use the technology for the purposes it was actually meant for.

Thus it becomes really important to understand where and for what purposes this technology can be used reasonably.

In case of spying software for mobile phones, it really becomes important to ascertain the right usage of the app as it may lead to breach of privacy and the company may suffer many repercussions as a result.

A company may want to use the software to just keep a vigil on the suspected employee.

Caution is advised due to the fact that the law of land may not permit to do this.

This form of ‘spy’ software has replaced the traditional method of hiring an investigator to catch conspirators working for the company.

Thus a lot of time and resources have been saved by the adoption of such software.

After creating an account with the mobile phone tracking software supplied, the app is downloaded and then installed on the target’s phone.

After the target phone then is paired with a phone to be used as the monitor after which tracking the activities of the target phone can begin.

There are also many advantages associated with the adoption of phone monitoring software. These include: -

• Trackinge SMS & MMS both sent and received
• Tracking all the calls made & received
• Finding the exact location of the suspect via GPS
• Accessing the phone book
• Email Tracking
• Photo Tracking
• No chance of detection by the target

Apart from the above-mentioned features, new and improved advanced versions of such software are offeringfacilities like ‘call listening’ in real time and ‘environment listening” which helps you listen to sounds in the surroundings of the targeted mobile phone.

The significant fact is that such software run on most kinds of mobile handsets from companies such as Blackberry, Apple, HTC, and Samsung. They also work on Android mobile phones.

For just keeping a vigil on the behaviour corporate employees mobile phone spying is modern boon andwhich one should save the company from impending dangers of errant employees.
