Korean giant giving no quarter in smartphone wars, despite US patent setbacks

Barcelona’s Mobile World Congress (MWC) will be the next battlefront in the war between Samsung and Apple when the Korean smartphone maker unveils the Galaxy S4 – it’s riposte to Apple’s iPhone 5 launched last week [September 12th 2012]. Although the Catalonian expo isn’t until February 2013, Samsung intends to have its latest Android device in the hands of consumers by mid-March, according to reports from Korea. The new Galaxy is rumoured to be the firm’s most powerful handset yet in terms of hardware design and software innovation and is due out nine months after last May’s debut of the Galaxy S3.
According to those close to the company, the device will run on the latest LTE (4G) networks and sport its in-house Exynos-branded application processors and quad-core chips.
Meanwhile it’s claimed that Samsung will be asking its Californian rival to stomp up more to use its mobile application processors produced at its plant in Austin, Texas.
One Samsung executive is reported as boasting the new S4 will generate more market share for the company as it is the only firm able to guarantee on-time delivery, output commitment and better pricing for mobile application processors.
Despite ongoing patent rifts, Samsung is already has a bigger market than Apple in Europe and the launch of the Galaxy S4 is expected to prove a manufacturing milestone for Samsung as the first device available as part of the maker’s new 12-month product cycle strategy.
Samsung already estimates that sales of the Galaxy S3 will exceed 30 million by the end of the year, with 20 million devices sold in the past three months alone.
UPDATE: Apple claims it has been “blown away” by iPhone 5 demand, despite its mixed reception from critics. Shares in the world’s most valuable company are expected to hit a landmark $700 later this week, with some analysts predicting it could hit $1,000 over the next two years as new products are launched, including a ‘mini’ iPad due before Christmas.
