Aimed at carriers twitchy about getting sued
Chinese phone giant ZTE is developing a new operating system with Mozilla as it and other manufacturers seek to avoid the crossfire from the ongoing Apple-Samsung patent feud.
ZTE Executive vice president He Shiyou told a briefing in Beijing yesterday [19th September 2012] that the new OS will be available to carriers in Q4 as it reduces its reliance on Android. Apple has already hinted that the Google op infringes its own patents and, wary of being sued like Samsung, other smartphone makers are getting increasingly nervous about using it.
Many of ZTE’s phones are re-branded by business customers, especially in emerging markets. The Chinese giant is already the world’s second biggest maker of mobile phones after Samsung and expects smartphone sales to double this year.
ZTE will also launch smartphones using Microsoft’s Windows Phone 8 OS by the end of this year or early next year, it was revealed.
Mozilla is best known as the developer of the Firefox web browser – a popular alternative to Microsoft’s Internet Explorer and Google Chrome.
