Crunch day tomorrow for Britain’s 4G

Government’s final roll of the dice to avoid court action

Last ditch attempts to broker a ceasefire over Britain’s 4G roll-out take place tomorrow [2nd October 2012] when network operators meet to avert litigation. Though the auction of 4G airwaves isn’t due to take place until the end of the year [2012], these now could be brought forward by the government if the warring parties agree to support Ofcom proposals. Earlier this year EE – Britain’s largest operator and the parent company of Orange and T-Mobile – won approval from Ofcom to run 4G on its existing spectrum, with Three also being allowed to use a slice of its airwaves.

But rival mobile operators, Vodafone and O2, accused the regulator of giving EE an unfair competitive advantage and threatened to go to court unless the 4G auction was brought forward.

Now, with EE’s own super-fast services due to be introduced in just over three weeks’ time [October 23rd 2012], everything hinges on tomorrow’s talks and the ability of culture secretary Maria Miller and Ofcom to convince Vodafone and O2 they won’t lose out.

Expectations are high that most of the issues surrounding 4G can be reached, though whether bringing forward the auction date is enough remains to be seen.

Behind the scenes it’s thought Vodafone and O2 have lobbied Ofcom to let them reuse their existing 3G spectrum for 4G, though until now the regulator has said it could take five to 10 years to free this up due to its existing heavy usage.

If that remains the case then the government’s only other option is to fast-track its 4G auction, ideally allowing to EE’s rivals to introduce their own services before the end of the year or soon after, compared to merely completing the auction process by next March as originally planned.

None of the network operators have commented on tomorrow’s talks.

* Ofcom has given the green light for Vodafone and O2 to merge their networks, ensuring a wider base for 4G services when they arrive. The regulator’s approval, first mooted in June 2012 but now made official, followed the merger of T- Mobile and Orange to create Everything Everywhere, now rebranded EE.
Vodafone and O2 will share design, management and maintenance of the merged network with O2 handling the UK’s eastern half, including Northern Ireland and Scotland, and Vodafone the West including Wales.

Motorola RAZRi to start shipping in UK

Rating: GoMobile News stumbles upon this accidentally

We could,  of course, claim that we have been ardently scouring The Net for info on the UK release date for Motorola’s RAZR i. However, we were lucky enough to spot this announcement on the Clove UK web site. It says … “ Good news for many of you reading this.  On Monday we will be shipping the first stock of the new Motorola RAZR i.Clove actually describes itself as a, “Specialist provider of mobile technology products, including smartphones, tablet PCs, netbooks, data cards and associated accessories. ”

Anyway, the company adds that, “The Titanium Grey Galaxy Note II has been delayed by 2 weeks until approximately 15th October [2012], but white units will begin being shipped on Monday.”

So you can have any colour as long as it is white, then.

What we are pulled by is the fact that Motorola itself hinted that the version of ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich) – 4.0.4, wasn’t quite perfected.

Yet our attempts to download an update to our loan Motorola RAZR i have drawn a blank.

The ‘i’ version of the RAZR is in GoMobile News‘ opnion strong enough to challenge another leading smartphone which starts with an ‘i’.  Particularly on price.

Let’s ee how sales go. What with the Motorola brand (which still has some pull) and the fact that Google is backing this company, the RAZR i should turn into quite a hot little number.

Shame it doesn’t have an HDMI port like the earlier version of the RAZR – the XT910.

Guest Post: Microsoft’s new tablet, will it be secure enoug

by Beth Janick, a copywriter with iphonespyapp

Microsoft recently announced its Surface tablet, due in Q4 2012, and users can’t wait for the new gadget. Apple’s iPad ruled the tablet market but many users want something different and new to the eye. Microsoft has exactly that and the success of the tablet is already gauged in the variety of  views that are springing up about the tablet and the excitement amongst potential users about this gadget. The only question that remains unanswered concerns the security of this tablet.Microsoft devices have always been liable to external threats. One’s Windows PC or laptop can’t survive without firewalls and anti-virus software’s running around the clock.

Keeping this s in mind, users must think about the security problems potentially affecting in the Surface Tablet.

Apple has a competitive advantage when it comes to security as its operating software isn’t easily targeted by malicious software and hackers so it’s normally secure.

Considering that all iPad’s are unlocked by service providers, only those with false ‘jailbreaks’ are prone to external issues regarding their tablets.

With this in mind, Microsoft has appreciated the potential value of security and has tried to brief its users about the new Tablet.

According to a Microsoft spokesman, there will be two different versions of the Surface tablet.

The first will run on the Windows RT operating system – new software that has taken its idea from the Windows 8 smartphones.

As this is new software it will be difficult to penetrate and could give users this competitive advantage.

Apart from this, the tablet will run on applications that have been adapted from Microsoft’s own ‘Metro’ user interface.

The second version of the Surface tablet will be a more high-end device and will arrive a few months after the launch of the Surface.

This will help Microsoft build a steady consumer base but apart from that, the company will be able to provide the best option to its different income earning users.

Those who like to spend more on gadgets will be happy to wait for the Surface Tablet’s second version.

Another spokesman from Microsoft talked about the seriousness of security issues.

He admitted that Microsoft previously didn’t take its security issues very seriously but as time passes the company has made changes to its operating systems.

Now every Windows based device has its own account lock, Firewalls, Microsoft Security Essentials pre-installed software and-  for Windows 7 users, Bitlocker data encryption software.

Microsoft’s Surface Tablet is expected to have the newer and upgraded version of Security Essentials known as Windows Defender in it.

As Microsoft  provides the widest scope for the extrication of data, it’s served as an enjoyment hub for hackers and spammers.

Windows Surface Tablet will have the initial interface from Microsoft, hence it could be targeted by such individuals and for that Microsoft would have to raise the bar much higher in terms of security.

Considering people will be paying considerably for the Surface tablet, the least they would expect would be safety and security in their tablet.

Microsoft also aims to make its tablet appeal towards the business and working classes, so if they’re going to store their data and presentations as well as personal and organisational information they need to have the ultimate trust in this gadget.

If Microsoft falters at the basic security level, it will lose its potential customers to future IPad generations.

As they say, the first impression is the last impression.

Microsoft is pushing its limits with the Surface Tablet, trying to bring innovation and creation at an impressive level to its users.

Apart from design and technological innovation, the other main thing that will take the tablet higher would be security.

So let’s hope Microsoft does something about that.

RIM shares soar as losses ease

All now hinges on BB10 launch in Spring

Shares in Blackberry maker Research in Motion shot up by a fifth in New york last night [27th September 2012] after reporting a smaller than expected loss in Q2 of $363 million, compared to $643 million in the previous quarter.
Early next year RIM is due to launch a series of new handsets based on its BlackBerry 10 operating system and its reversal of fortunes on Nasdaq couldn’t be more timely. News that its losses were easing lifted its shares from near-record lows as investors looked more favourably on the firm’s future.
The Toronto-based manufacturer also revealed it had managed to build its global Blackberry subscriber base to 80 million global over the quarter though it still sold just 7.4 million Blackberrys, far fewer than analysts had hoped even when factoring in stiff competition from Apple and Samsung.
CEO Thorsten Heins told analysts that RIM’s cost-cutting programme was on track to save $1 billion in the current fiscal year and had already achieved savings of at least $350 million a year, allowing the firm to build up a war chest for its new launches.
Revenue for Q2 was $2.9 billion, up from $2.8 billion in Q1 but down 31 per cent from a year ago.
The overall figures were significantly better than feared, sending the stock 20 per cent up to $8.57 in after-hours trading.

Chip designer Imagination falls on Texas worries

News could cost UK firm £10 million

Shares in British chip designer Imagination Technology will be closely watched today [27th September 2012] having had 10 per cent wiped off their value after key partner Texas Instruments revealed it’s to stop making chips for smartphones and tablets.
Analysts are already warning Imagination’s shares could take a further hit when trading opens in London, with shares in fellow UK processor designer ARM also suffering from the news.
One of of the giants of processing and still the second largest US chip maker by revenues, Texas is now thought to be pulling out of the mobile market completely in the face of competition from the likes of Qualcomm and Nvidia.
Kings Langley-based Imagination, which employs 1,200 people, is calculated to derive up to 20 per cent of its royalties from Texas, worth around £10 million a year.
At close last night its shares stood at 470p compared to a high of 717p in April.
The fall wiped out recent gains for the company whose designs can also be found in the core A6 processor chip used in Apple’s latest iPhone 5 smartphone.
