As long ago as October [2012], we reported that Nokia was saying, “WP7.8 will be announced soon. Hang in there,” in a post by Nokia News on Google Plus. Well, it’s been a long wait and WP7.8 still isn’t with us in time for Xmas 2012. As regular GoMobile News readers will know, Nokia’s earlier Lumia models such as the Lumia 800 were running Windows Phone 7.5 (W7 Mango). Sadly, such handsets won’t be upgradeable to the very latest version of Windows Phone – WP8. Instead existing loyal Nokia users will have to wait for the final upgrade to WP7 known as WP7.8. Microsoft has officially said in won’t become available until “early 2013″. However, it’s already been spotted in the wild but it seems that the operators haven’t been able to work their magic and brand WP7.8 in time for Xmas.
Those who are extremely brave or downright impatient could follow useful advice given by Nokiapoweruser here.
The news site ran a story saying that those with a Lumia 510, 610, 710, 800 or 900 should be capable of receiving the update labelled as ‘Firmware build 8858′.
Phone geeks who know what they are doing can download this frimware and install it using an application known as NaviFirm +.
It’s available from Symbian Toys here and the firmware should work for most of the European countries and APAC variants.
So why would you want to take the risk and upgrade your Lumia yourself? Well, it will offer facilities that the full WP8 version possesses.
These include resizable Live Tiles, a new Start screen, new Accent colours along with different icons for Xbox, Office and Store.
Perhaps the biggest advantage is to be able to replace Bing as the default search engine in the WP Explorer browser and choose Google instead.
In the UK, those who want the Nokia Lumia 920 WP8 handset are presently stuck with getting it only from EE but Vodafone has just announced that it hopes to offer the 920 after Xmas.
So you’re stuck with the Lumia 820 because Nokia has also admitted that its third entry level WP8 handset 620 until early 2013.
The sooner Nokia starts selling Android based handsets, the better.
