Rating: GoMo News fails to track down Abba’s Agnetha Fältskog

About three years ago there was a big scare that the typical smartphone had mutated into a celebrity stalker’s weapon of choice. A typical headlines was ‘iPhone apps could encourage celebrity stalkers’ written by our old chum Jack Schofield in The Guardian here back in 2010. So when a young reader begged us to tell her what app she needed to try to track down ex-Abba singer, Agnetha Fältskog in London. We thought there’d be no problem helping her out. Wrong. Most of the apps have disappeared. So have some of the web sites, too. It might work for Justin Bieber fans but anyone less famous – forget it.
Alright, let’s start with the celebrity spotting app which does exist for the iPhone. It’s OK! Celebspotter, it’s free and you can download it from the iTunes App store here.
As we said, plenty of sitings for Justin Bieber but not a sausage for Agnetha. To be brutally honest, not many fans post anything.
Next we discovered that possible those flocking to Hollywood would do better with their celebrity spotting.
For example, Celebrity HotSpots is available on iTunes from here exists but it is only available in the USA from Apple.
The same thing seems to apply to Fantapper which is on iTunes here. Once again only available in the USA.
Now here’s a strange one. There was at one time an iPhone app called the iPap Celebrity Spotter and it used to be here.
When we tried to download it from iTunes, the store couldn’t find it. Even in the US iTunes store, it seems.
Which is strange because the iPap site itself – http://ipap.me, mentions the app as though it still exists and you can still register on the site.
No sightings of Agnetha, though.
The next one is just downright weird. It’s the app Papture which we mentioned only last year here because it featured Apple’s (then new) in-app billing.
We’ve tried and tried to find this app and even the web site but no luck.
Talking of web sites, most of the relevant ones seem to have disappeared.
As we mentioned above, pature.com has gone. So has Just Spotted and scoupler whilst Scoupt has mutated into just spotting your friends.
Then there’s Gawker Stalker which does exist but there’s nothing much about celebs on it here.
Now the app which caused all the fuss three years ago was CelebAround and its site should be here. But it is gone.
If you try the iTunes site for the app here it simply says the item is not in the UK store (in our case). No mention of it being anywhere else.
If you are a successful celeb stalker you could always try sending your video or photo to the BBC here but we doubt whether they’d pay for it.

And before you mention it, yes we have tried monitoring mentions on Twitter but if you have any good twitter apps to recommend …
