Guest Post: Common QR code mistakes made by marketers

by Steven Taylor, who occasionally works with Time Warner Cable

Are QR codes a marketing blessing or a curse? If you make any of these five common mistakes, your QR campaign could be the latter. They are: Linking to a desktop site; failing to track; printing code too small; don’t put it in the wrong place; and failing to have a back-up plan.

Linking to a desktop site

QR codes are typically scanned using a smartphone or tablet, and if you’re linking to the desktop version of your site rather than a mobile site, you could be losing valuable customers.

Make it easy on your smartphone users by setting your mobile site as your QR code landing page, and if you don’t’ have a mobile dedicated site, there’s no time like the present!

When you’re choosing your URL, also make sure the address is relatively short.

The longer the URL, the more ‘dots’ will be in the QR code, making it more opaque and more likely to blend in.

Failing to track

QR codes are more than a convenient way to get potential customers to your website.

The biggest draw in using a QR code for an advertising and marketing campaign is the ability to track printed material and determine a real ROI.

Choose a QR code provider that offers built-in analytics or create a campaign in Google Analytics to help you determine who is scanning your code.

Printing code too small

It’s a relief to some marketing and advertising professionals that they can now use a small icon instead of a long, difficult-to-type URL.

However, printing the QR code too small can cause problems with QR readers and difficulty scanning.

Make sure your QR code is printed no smaller than 1 inch by 1 inch on your ad or flyer (ideally, the QR code should be about 1.5 by 1.5 inches.)

Additionally, your QR code should stand out from the rest of your design while still reflecting your brand (many QR code companies allow you to personalise your code with colors and designs that fit your business).

It is even possible to incorporate logos into QR codes. (See our  Weekend QR Code roundup) – Ed.

Don’t put it in the wrong place

QR codes have some amazing benefits, but if you create a QR code advertising plan based around codes that are inaccessible, you might do more harm than good.

Stay away from billboards in busy roads (after all, who will be scanning a code while they are driving?) or areas with no cellular or internet service (including train or subway stations and rural areas.) * see below

Think of the places your customers will have the most free time to pick up an ad or flyer and scan your QR code – think restaurants, waiting rooms and grocery stores, or other places customers tend to ‘linger’.

Failing to have a back-up plan

Although QR codes are becoming increasingly common, many people still aren’t using QR readers, or using them to their full potential.

Your back-up plan should consist of two things:- education and an alternative to your QR code.

First, educate your customers on QR readers. Mention your favourite QR reader by name and indicate where your customer can find it.

Tell them how to scan and what to expect – a short summary might take up a portion of your ad or flyer, but if you’re relying on the QR scan, it will be worth the space.

Secondly, add a shortened URL that’s easy to type into a smartphone browser for the customers who aren’t interested in scanning a QR code.

*Footnote: Here at GoMobile Towers we’d disagree with you Steven on not targeting subway (Underground) and train stations. We frequently scan in a QR code when bored on the train and access it later.

iPad Application Development – Adding Uniqueness to the Tablet

Mobile
industry has welcomed a large number of applications specially
developed for iPad and iPhone jointly in recent times. All credit
goes to the iPad app developers for creating benchmarks in the field of iPad application development because they have worked with full
enthusiasm to get hold of the unbelievable target. Though, a large
number of apps are now a part of Apple iTunes store still, does you
believe that all these apps carry advantages with them? Let’s check
it out.

A
recent study shows that most of the apps do not carry any real
advantage. Such apps are just created to attract the people, as they
are filled with all non-sense yet unique material that somehow
fascinate the buyers but are unable in offering any true benefit to
them. On the other hand, a number of applications do have a strong
social message but, they miss wonderful concept.

However,
in both the cases the buyers do not get the 100% marvelous apps. Most
of the experts iPad developers agreed that they generate those
applications in prior, which can attract the mass crowd irrespective
of the quality or advantages it offer Therefore, the need of a highly
advantageous app remains in the mind of the client and hence, they
prefer hiring a developer to expand an app based on their own
concepts, views and ideology. The hired programmers also work
practically and generate the exact app desired by the client. Most of
the consumers demand for the application under following categories:

Travel
and Tourism

Entertainment
and Fun

Education

Insurance

Business
and Finance

Health
and Care

Personal
Utility

E-Commerce
Apps

Lifestyle
and Trend

And
Others

The
above mentioned categories can be termed as hot in demand and most of
the apps are expanded under these only.

If
you are planning to get an application developed either for your
business or for any other thing, you should make sure that the app
must offer multiple advantages and should be based on the technology
that last for a long time. For the creation of such application, you
are required to hire iPad application developers or the development
that have brilliant expertise in dealing with the following things:

iPad
Application Development

Updating
iPad Apps

Migrate
iPad Applications

Building
Cross-Platform iPad Application

iPad
Software Development

Further,
an individual must also ensure that the development company holds a
remarkable position in the IT sector and the programmers associated
with it possess high experience, intelligence and excellence.
Finally, the client must also sign a confidential agreement with the
company for the privacy and security of the project.

Retailers’ mobile sites could perform badly over Xmas says Keynote

Rating: ‘ Showrooming’ is major concern for bricks & mortar retailers

It has become obvious that 2012 has become the Year of the Mobile Shopper. Consequently, large numbers of Xmas shoppers are expected to use their smartphones for research and purchasing. A crucial activity amongst mobile shoppers is ‘Showrooming’ which is using your smartphone to compare prices and products before purchasing in store. Keynote reckons showrooming has become the’ trend du jour’ in retail – especially for High Street brick & mortar stores. However, Keynote predicts that consumer expectations and actual user experience are going to be wildly different. Which is worrying because – according to Forrester Research, online retail sales are forecasted to be worth $68.4 billion in 2012 – representing a 15 per cent rise over 2011.

The crux of the problem lies with the fact that 64 per cent of smartphone users want an under four second page download, whilst 60 per cent of tablet users want an under three second page download.

Yet Keynote’s Worldwide Mobile Retail Index (24 sites) suggests that the average response time remains at 11.8 seconds. (See our previous report here on which retailers fared best & worst).

Interestingly, it is most tablet users who will be disappointed by these kinds of performance figures. Two-thirds of mobile sales will come through tablets.

That’s according to Adobe which recently predicted that sales from mobile devices will rise 110 per cent to account for 21 percent of all online sales.

We’re not quite sure why Adobe cares given that it has stopped supporting Flash on mobile devices, forcing smartphone owners to find alternative solutions. Ho-hum.

Anway, Keynote says four in five mobile device owners will use their devices in some way to assist with shopping – including show rooming, couponing, reviews and research. (That’s based on figures from Google/Ipsos).

IMRG/Cap Gemini research indicates that 20 per cent of all online sales are predicted to come from mobile devices but GoMobile News believes that figure will be much higher over Xmas.

“While some sites have taken mobile web performance seriously and are delivering great experiences, the vast majority are still far behind the curve,” warns Aaron Rudger, a senior manager for mobile web performance with Keynote.

He continues, “We believe this year’s contribution from mobile will represent a significantly lost opportunity in goodwill and sales.”

Given the prominence of tablets amongst mobile shoppers and the fact that EE still can’t sell you a tablet for its 4GEE LTE network, retailers only real option is going to be optimising their mobile sites.

Otherwise, many retailers – and mobile shoppers, are going to be left crying into their mulled wine this Xmas.

RIM shares soar 16 per cent as investors regain confidence

Just over a month to go before launch of BlackBerry 10 devices

Shares in BlackBerry maker RIM received a rare boost on the Toronto stock exchange last night [November 22nd 2012] amid renewed optimism over its next range of smartphones. RIM shares, which have now risen in the last seven straight trading sessions, rose to their highest level since May ending the day at C$12. Nasdaq, where RIM’s shares are also traded and where volumes usually top those in Toronto, was closed for the Thanksgiving holiday. At one point the company’s stock was up more than 16 per cent, with the rally sparked by National Bank analyst Kris Thompson who boosted his price target to C$15 (£9) from C$12.

Thompson believes that there is more money to be made in the stock ahead of the early 2013 launch of the make-or-break new line of devices.

In recent years, RIM has struggled to compete with the iPhone and devices running on Google’s Android OS.

But in just over a month’s time, on 30th January 2013 (see here), it will launch its long-awaited new BlackBerry handsets, with the event taking place simultaneously in different countries.

RIM’s new BlackBerry 10 operating system will also be unveiled.

Since the summer of this year Canadian tycoon Prem Watsa, dubbed the ‘Warren Buffet of the North’ and who is also a RIM director, has significantly ramped up his own shareholding in the troubled phone maker through his investment vehicle Fairfax Financial Holdings.

It is now RIM’s single biggest shareholder with around a 10 per cent stake.

RIM, meanwhile, has been bedevilled with speculation that – with its share hitherto in the doldrums – it was ripe for a takeover.

Although the BlackBerry has been knocked off its perch by Apple’s iPhone and Google Android handsets, the company still boast a vast library of 11,000-plus patents, 78 million subscribers and 56 million BlackBerry Messenger users, all of which could provide any potential buyers (including Apple, Google and Microsoft) with strategic leverage.

Britain’s Ofcom ushers in prospects for ‘white space’ mobile broadband

New consultation aims to increase capacity without wrecking digital TV signals

UK regulator, Ofcom, has signalled that new City-wide Wi-Fi networks using ‘white spaces’ (the gaps in between bands of spectrum used to broadcast TV) could be up and running by Q1 2014. The announcement comes as Ofcom tries to avert a nationwide ‘capacity crunch’  and follows its own recent research revealing how Britain will need 80 times more airwave space in around 18 years (2030) than is currently needed. The research also concluded that more than twice the amount of data (20 million GB) is now being consumed over the UK’s mobile networks compared to last year (9 million GB), a growth largely driven by the soaring use of smartphones and tablets.

In response to the growing problem the regulator has announced plans to open up as much of the airwaves as possible, opening a consultation that places the first white-space spectrum in the UHF TV bands 470 MHz to 790 MHz.

Ofcom also recognises that sub-1GHz spectrum as having better reach and building penetration than that above, making it a particularly attractive proposition for mobile networking.

[One reason why Vodafone keeps stressing that the 800 MHz version of 4G/LTE it hopes to offer next year [2013] is better indoors than EE’s 1800 MHz network.]

At the frequencies where white spaces exist, signals can also travel more easily than traditional Wi-Fi or Bluetooth networks, raising the possibility of wireless internet networks on a much bigger scale than at present.

Announcing the initiative Ofcom CEO Ed Richards declared that white space technology offered ‘significant opportunities’ for innovation and enterprise, from rural broadband to enhanced Wi-fi.

He added, “It also represents a fundamentally different approach to using spectrum by searching and recycling unused gaps in the airwaves.”

“This could prove critical in averting a global spectrum capacity crunch as consumers demand more bandwidth over different devices.”

Richards also claimed the framework would ensure signal interference to existing digital TV users would be minimal.

The consultation is now open until mid-January. When it closes the regulator will liaise with European authorities and finalise arrangements.

Britain’s BT is already trialling white space technology across rural parts of Cornwall.

Phones 4U in big UK push for Windows Phone 8

Rating: Nokia reliant on this one retailer for its UK sales

Samsung just makes Xmas with Ativ S WP8 phone

It is interesting to see that UK High Street retailer, Phones 4u, will be running a series of Windows Phone 8 launch events in conjunction with Microsoft, Nokia and HTC. No mention of Samsung, the world’s leading handset supplier, lending its support to this event, though. Furthermore, despite the fact that Phones 4U is also EE’s distribution partner for 4GEE, the retailer seems to be keeping quiet about the fact that only the Nokia WP8  handsets can be connected to EE’s 4GEE LTE network. To confirm that it’s keeping quiet about 4G, take a look at Phones 4U’s web page for Windows Phone 8 handsets here.

Surfers have to deliberately add ‘connectivity’ as a feature to see which handsets offer 4G and which don’t.

Curiously, Phones 4U mentions one Samsung Windows Phone on its site – the Omnia M (W7 Mango)- but not the latest one.  The Ativ S.

Although the release date has obviously slipped, it seems the Samsung Ativ S will now be available on multiple UK  networks some time in December.

If you look at the Phones 4U web site, it gives 21st December as when orders will be delivered. Only just in time for Xmas then.

That late date is also probably the reason why Samsung won’t be at these Windows Phone 8 events which take place in the North of England in Manchester (Market Street), Birmingham (Merry Hill) and Gateshead (Metro).

“We know from the fact that we have sold more Windows Phones in the UK than anyone else,” commented Phones 4u’s CMO, Scott Hooton.

According to GfK’s Top 100 retail contract handset list in the UK from 2nd-8th September 2012, Phones 4u’s Windows Phone sales account for 48 per cent of all Windows Phones sold in the UK.

Hooton added, “Our customers are strong advocates of the operating system and we are committed to providing them with unparalleled expert advice on the High Street and online for Windows Phone 8 as Microsoft launch the next generation of Windows Phone.”
