UK entertainment downloads pass £1bn mark for first time

Singles make a comeback

UK sales of downloaded music, video and games passed the £1 billion mark for the first time last year due to the growing use of smartphones and broadband, according to the Entertainment Retailers Association.
Video downloads showed the most growth, with sales growing by more than a fifth to £97.9 million, reflecting a wider adoption of devices capable of showing high-quality graphics.
Digital music sales similarly rose 15.1 per cent over the year to £383.3 million, excluding the rise in music streaming services such as Spotify and Deezer. Some 3.7 billion tracks were streamed in the UK during 2012, with total single sales up 6 per cent to 188.6 million. Digital downloads made up 99.6 per cent of all single sales.
Consumers also downloaded more than thirty million albums, equating to a 14.8 per cent rise, with Emeli Sandé’s Our Version of Events proving the best seller.
